Primary Role and Purpose:
Transport students on assigned route in a safe and orderly manner. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from assigned destinations.
Qualifications:
Education:
Valid New York State commercial driver’s license (Class B)
Skills:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must pass alcohol and drug test.
- Must follow written and verbal instructions.
- Effectively communicate with others.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedure.
- Capable of managing student behavior.
- Capable of driving bus safely.
Experience:
Minimum one year of driving commercial vehicles is preferred.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
- Drive on designated route and follow charter schedules.
- Transport students to and from extracurricular activities.
- Inspect bus before and after each trip for mechanical defects and advise supervisor of maintenance problems.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and mechanical failures. Compile required reports.
- Maintain log on bus mileage, gas and oil consumptions and number of passengers transported.
- Maintain assigned bus in clean and fueled condition.
Student Management
- See that student’s board and leave the bus, and cross the street in a safe and orderly manner.
- Ensure all discipline rules are enforced; report discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Advise administration, teachers and parents on an ongoing basis regarding student bus behavior.
- Discuss with students safe riding rules and regulations.
Safety
- Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensure safe operation of bus before and after driving through inspection of vehicle.
- Maintain all emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar and reflector.
- Make work area free of unsafe conditions and inform proper supervisor of any problem that is not immediately correctable.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Inform supervisor of any hazardous conditions.
Other
- Communicate effectively with transportation office by use of two-way radio.
- Operate bus during irregular hours as needed.
- Keep safety certification current through training programs required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
